Tony Blair verliert immer mehr Mitstreiter in wichtigen Ämtern. Nach dem Labour-Fraktionschef Robin Cook und dem Staatssekretär Philip Hunt trat nun John Denham als stellvertretender Innenminister aus Protest gegen Blairs Kriegskurs zurück.
London - Stunden vor einer wichtigen Unterhaus-Abstimmung über eine Militäraktion gegen den Irak schwindet der Rückhalt des Premierministers zunehmend. Mit John Denham trat der dritte Labour-Abgeordnete von einem Regierungsamt zurück. Der Staatsminister im Innenministerium und Stellvertreter von Innenminister David Blunkett erklärte, er könne den Kriegskurs von Premierminister Tony Blair nicht mittragen. Denham war Stellvertreter von Innenminister David Blunkett.

Die Antwort auf das Ultimatum des US-Präsidenten ließ nicht lange auf sich warten. Und sie war nicht anders als erwartet: Der irakische Diktator Saddam Hussein lehnt es kategorisch ab, ins Exil zu gehen.
Bagdad - Im irakischen Staatsfernsehen wies Saddam heute die Forderung George W. Bushs zurück. Zuvor hatte schon sein Sohn Udai erklärt, der Gang ins Exil komme nicht in Frage. Es werde eine blutige Schlacht geben, kündigte Udai in Bagdad an. "Der Vorschlag (...) kommt von einer Person, die nicht ganz bei Sinnen ist (...) der Vorschlag sollte sein, dass Bush sein Amt in Amerika verlässt, er und seine Familie", fügte Udai einer Erklärung seines Büros zufolge hinzu.
"Die Frauen und Mütter der Amerikaner, die gegen uns kämpfen werden, werden Blut und nicht Tränen weinen", kündigte Udai weiter an. Sie seien nirgendwo mehr sicher.

Guardian: Israeli wall to encircle Palestine
Ariel Sharon has told his cabinet that he plans to extend the "security fence" Israel is building along the length of the West Bank so that it entirely encircles any Palestinian state.
The revelation, which follows the Israeli government's decision to oppose full independence for Palestine in favour of a state with "certain attributes of sovereignty", immediately drew fire from the Palestinians who accused the Israeli prime minister of trying to turn the occupied territories into a huge prison.
Meanwhile, the Israeli army killed 10 Palestinians, including a four-year-old girl, in a raid on a Gaza refugee camp yesterday.
Hanan Ansar and two teenagers were among those killed as tanks and helicopters led an assault on Nusseirat camp in search of wanted Palestinians and to destroy the homes of "terrorists".

Parolen mit Kreide kritzeln statt mit Sprühfarbe sprayen: eine neue Erscheinung an Demonstrationen in Bern, erstmals festgestellt an der Irak-Friedenskundgebung am 15.Februar. Und erstmals massiv zur Anwendung kam die Kreide beim «4. Antifaschistischen Abendspaziergang» vom 1. März: Am Abendspaziergang 2002 war nämlich heftig gesprayt worden, so dass die Polizei eingriff, es zu Zusammenstössen kam, und heuer wollten es die Veranstalter aus Berns linksautonomer Szene nicht dazu kommen lassen. Wer spraye, fliege aus der «Demo» raus, wurde über Megafon gewarnt damit aber dennoch «die Stadt bunt» werde, verteilten Aktivisten Strassenkreide.
Polizei wie auch Presse sahen es eher gelassen, hängten das Thema tief, zumal Kreide ja leicht fortzuputzen sei; die Polizei meldete, an der «ruhigen» Demonstration seien «kaum Sachbeschädigungen» angerichtet worden. Innenstadt-Organisationen und Gewerbetreibende indes sahens ganz anders: Der Antifa-Aufmarsch sei «keinesfalls so friedfertig» verlaufen, die Kreide-Sprüche seien eine «massive Sachbeschädigung», von der Polizei werde «entschlosseneres Vorgehen» erwartet, fand die Spezialgeschäfte-Vereinigung Bern Shopping. Ähnlich tönte die Vereinigung Heit Sorg zu Bärn, die zu dem Thema jetzt gar eine parlamentarische Diskussion initiieren will: Der neue Trend sei «Besorgnis erregend», der Schaden «beträchtlich», die Polizei solle «konsequent vorgehen und bei künftigen Demos keine Toleranz walten lassen».

Gespannt erwartet wurde denn auch der letzte Donnerstagabend, denn da würde sich zeigen, wie mit dem Phänomen fortan umgegangen werde: Angesagt war eine Palästina-Kundgebung und auf dem Flugblatt wurde ausdrücklich aufgerufen, Kreide mitzunehmen. Und siehe: Polizei-Einsatzleiter Ulrich Bütikofer drohte, wer mit Kreide kritzle, riskiere eine Strafanzeige wegen Sachbeschädigung. Die Polizei toleriert es also doch nicht, sie frisst die «Demo»-Kreide nicht.
«Die Polizei war sich der rechtlichen Situation zu wenig bewusst, und hinzu kommt, dass die Kreide offensichtlich doch nicht so leicht zu entfernen ist», erklärt Stapo-Informationschef Franz Märki. Eine juristische Prüfung habe gezeigt: Kreide-Kritzelei falle unter Sachbeschädigung ja, im Rahmen von Demonstrationen sei es sogar ein Offizialdelikt, das heisst, die Polizei muss es von Amts wegen verfolgen. Dies will sie denn künftig auch tun. An den Grenzen des Irak warten amerikanische und britische Soldaten auf den Einsatzbefehl. Der wird auch eine Menge anderer Menschen bewegen - vom Arbeitsplatz auf die Straße. In Großbritannien bereitet die Friedensbewegung Streiks und Demonstrationen vor. Der Protest ist weltweit vernetzt.
Wann genau der Krieg beginnen wird, weiß zur Zeit niemand, außer denen, die ihn planen. Doch auch die Opposition gegen den Krieg plant, und das europa-, ja weltweit koordiniert: Sobald die ersten Cruise Missiles in Bagdad einschlagen, wird die Erschütterung auch in den Hauptstädten der Welt zu spüren sein - und vielleicht nirgendwo heftiger als in London.
"Für den Tag, wenn der Krieg beginnt", steht auf den Webseiten der zahlreichen in der "Stop the War Coalition" zusammen gefassten Kriegsgegner-Organisationen in Großbritannien, "ruft die Koalition jedermann auf, alle Tätigkeiten zu beenden. All across the Middle East, they are deploying by the thousand. In the deserts of Kuwait, in Amman, in northern Iraq, in Turkey, in Israel and in Baghdad itself. There must be 7,000 journalists and crews "in theatre", as the more jingoistic of them like to say. In Qatar, a massive press centre has been erected for journalists who will not see the war. How many times General Tommy Franks will spin his story to the press at the nine o'clock follies, no one knows. He doesn't even like talking to journalists.
But the journalistic resources being laid down in the region are enormous. The BBC alone has 35 reporters in the Middle East, 17 of them "embedded" – along with hundreds of reporters from the American networks and other channels – in military units. Once the invasion starts, they will lose their freedom to write what they want. There will be censorship. And, I'll hazard a guess right now, we shall see many of the British and American journalists back to their old trick of playing toy soldiers, dressing themselves up in military costumes for their nightly theatrical performances on television. Incredibly, several of the American networks have set up shop in the Kurdish north of Iraq with orders not to file a single story until war begins – in case this provokes the Iraqis to expel their network reporters from Baghdad.
The orchestration will be everything, the pictures often posed, the angles chosen by "minders", much as the Iraqis will try to do the same thing in Baghdad. Take yesterday's front-page pictures of massed British troops in Kuwait, complete with arranged tanks and perfectly formatted helicopters. This was the perfectly planned photo-op. Of course, it won't last.
Here's a few guesses about our coverage of the war to come. American and British forces use thousands of depleted uranium (DU) shells – widely regarded by 1991 veterans as the cause of Gulf War syndrome as well as thousands of child cancers in present day Iraq – to batter their way across the Kuwaiti-Iraqi frontier. Within hours, they will enter the city of Basra, to be greeted by its Shia Muslim inhabitants as liberators. US and British troops will be given roses and pelted with rice – a traditional Arab greeting – as they drive "victoriously" through the streets. The first news pictures of the war will warm the hearts of Messrs Bush and Blair. There will be virtually no mention by reporters of the use of DU munitions.
But in Baghdad, reporters will be covering the bombing raids that are killing civilians by the score and then by the hundred. These journalists, as usual, will be accused of giving "comfort to the enemy while British troops are fighting for their lives". By now, in Basra and other "liberated" cities south of the capital, Iraqis are taking their fearful revenge on Saddam Hussein's Baath party officials. Men are hanged from lamp-posts. Much television footage of these scenes will have to be cut to sanitise the extent of the violence.
Far better for the US and British governments will be the macabre discovery of torture chambers and "rape-rooms" and prisoners with personal accounts of the most terrible suffering at the hands of Saddam's secret police. This will "prove" how right "we" are to liberate these poor people. Then the US will have to find the "weapons of mass destruction" that supposedly provoked this bloody war. In the journalistic hunt for these weapons, any old rocket will do for the moment......

All across the Middle East, they are deploying by the thousand. In the deserts of Kuwait, in Amman, in northern Iraq, in Turkey, in Israel and in Baghdad itself. There must be 7,000 journalists and crews "in theatre", as the more jingoistic of them like to say. In Qatar, a massive press centre has been erected for journalists who will not see the war. How many times General Tommy Franks will spin his story to the press at the nine o'clock follies, no one knows. He doesn't even like talking to journalists.
But the journalistic resources being laid down in the region are enormous. The BBC alone has 35 reporters in the Middle East, 17 of them "embedded" – along with hundreds of reporters from the American networks and other channels – in military units. Once the invasion starts, they will lose their freedom to write what they want. There will be censorship. And, I'll hazard a guess right now, we shall see many of the British and American journalists back to their old trick of playing toy soldiers, dressing themselves up in military costumes for their nightly theatrical performances on television. In the letter, Rumsfeld also calls for America to go to war alone, attacks the United Nations and says the US should not be 'crippled by a misguided insistence on unanimity in the UN Security Council'.
