US propaganda fuelled the first Gulf war. It will fuel this one too - and the risks are even greater
"I have a picture from the last Gulf war. It was taken in the basement of the Al Rashid hotel, the night the war started. The look on my face is one you might expect of a 28-year-old reporter at the centre of one of the biggest stories of my lifetime: earnest, excited and thrilled to be in Baghdad.
Eleven years later, I'm on maternity leave and the news of an impending second Gulf war follows me around the kitchen. This time, I feel only a sense of intense danger as the Middle East lurches towards a possible chemical and biological war. "

Observer: Osama issues new call to arms

Counterpunch: A World Wide Intifada? Why? by William A. Cook
"A satellite view of attacks against western interests spotlights the reality that a world-wide intifada against the "developed" nations of the west and their allies is already underway. Russian apartment houses and, recently, a theater, the Twin Towers in New York, two Bali discos, a French super tanker blown up off the coast of Yemen, an Israeli hotel destroyed in Kenya, a failed missle shot at an Israeli passenger plane off the coast of Africa, and others too numerous to mention demonstrate the magnitude of the effort underway to wake up the west to the consequences of its dominance over the lives and interests of peoples throughout the world. Recent events, coupled with the investigations of Jean-Louis Bruguiere, the French Judge who has been tracking terrorist acts for two decades, forces us to grapple with why this is happening. US Gov Targetting Activists For Computer-Searchs
Sat, 07 Dec 2002 04:02:27 -0800
Issue Number 18 - November 28, 2002
They have begun pulling mildly leftist white people off of airplanes.
It's time for the rest of us to get very worried.
The evidence is rolling in, and it is unmistakable: the Bush people are
assembling purely political lists of individuals and groups to be
targeted during some future crisis, real or manufactured. The list makers
probably do not yet know what they plan to do to the people on their
enemies lists, which are still fragmented among various agencies.
However, once such lists are compiled, eventual government action becomes
all but inevitable. It is already clear that the list will be a very long
one, reaching into broad categories of what the current rulers consider
to be dangerous dissenters.
Civil rights lawyers, Green Party activists and even the Catholic
advocacy group Peace Action are on the lists, as are, it appears, Amnesty
International and various environmental activist organizations.
In an article titled "Grounded," the mainstream Salon.com related the
experience of Center for Constitutional Rights assistant legal director
Barbara Olshansky, who was forced to pull down her pants in view of other
travelers at Newark International Airport. When the lawyer protested the
indignity, a security agent replied, "The computer spit you out. I don't
know why, and I don't have time to talk to you about it."
Six other employees of the center had been pulled out of an airport
boarding line a month earlier. Since all had purchased their tickets
separately under their own names, it was plain that the Center for
Constitutional Rights staff were on some kind of list. Readers familiar
with the workings of bureaucracies will immediately recognize the clanks,
squeaks and grinds of cumbersome government machinery getting into gear.
Olshansky and her colleagues are, apparently, not alone. For months,
rumors and anecdotes have circulated among leftwing and other activist
groups about people who have been barred from flying or delayed at
security gates because they are "on a list."
But now, a spokesman for the new Transportation Security Administration
has acknowledged for the first time that the government has a list of
about 1,000 people who are deemed "threats to aviation" and not allowed
on airplanes under any circumstances. And in an interview with Salon, the
official suggested that Olshansky and other political activists may be on
a separate list that subjects them to strict scrutiny but allows them to
fly.
"We have a list of about 1,000 people," said David Steigman, the TSA
spokesman. The agency was created a year ago by Congress to handle
transportation safety during the war on terror. "This list is composed of
names that are provided to us by various government organizations like
the FBI, CIA and INS.... We don't ask how they decide who to list. Each
agency decides on its own who is a 'threat to aviation.'"
The agency has no guidelines to determine who gets on the list, Steigman
says, and no procedures for getting off the list if someone is wrongfully
on it.
The Salon.com article details the harrassment of other political
travelers, including people from conservative organizations that
apparently wound up in the computer by mistake or through haste. Writer
Dave Lindorff notes that the federal Transportation Security Agency's
unpredictable actions "seem to be netting mostly priests, elderly nuns,
Green Party campaign operatives, left-wing journalists, right-wing
activists and people affiliated with Arab or Arab-American groups."
The 1,000-name "no fly" list referred to by the TSA spokesman is
certainly not the larger, political list. If that were the case, none of
the individuals interviewed by Salon.com would have ever left the ground.
The article's subjects are on a different set of lists. It is clear that
the airport agents became confused because of a proliferation of lists -
data in temporary disarray.
Bring me more names!
What is obvious is that names are being generated and dumped into an
embryonic but evolving apparatus of wide-ranging political scope. The
Bush men simply haven't fine-tuned the procedure. They have not yet
differentiated between the "somewhat dangerous," the "immediately
dangerous" or the "might become dangerous" - or whatever color-coded
formulas ultimately emerge.
They want names, lots of them. The scatter-shot, eclectic character of
the listings indicates that a furious demand is emanating from the
highest levels of the bureaucracy for as many names as possible, as soon
as possible. Collation and categorization will come later.
The exhortations from on-high were especially shrill in the corridors and
field offices of the FBI. The New York Times headlined their November 21
article, "F.B.I. Officials Say Some Agents Lack a Focus on Terror," but
any low-GS clerk could understand what the bureau's number two official,
Bruce J. Gebhardt, was actually demanding when he sent out a memo to 56
field office agents-in-charge: names, names and more names.
"You need to instill a sense of urgency" in field agents, Mr. Gebhardt
wrote. "They need to get out on the street and develop sources.
"You need to demand that information is being sent" to the bureau's
headquarters in Washington, he continued, adding: "You are the leaders of
the F.B.I. You cannot fail at this mission. Too many people are depending
on us...."
Among their complaints, senior bureau officials have said they are
unhappy that some field offices are not moving aggressively enough to use
secret terrorism warrants, are not developing enough intelligence sources
to penetrate possible terrorist cells and are not loading all the
terrorism-related information they receive into the F.B.I.'s central
computer system.
Officials said that senior bureau leaders in recent weeks have directed
field supervisors to demand weekly written briefings from their
counter-terrorism squads, ask more questions about investigations and
push for greater use of warrants and surveillance against suspects.
The New York Times is unwilling or incapable of interpreting Gebhardt's
memo, but every agent in the field understands perfectly what is
demanded: names for the computers. Not the names of "sleeper" terrorists,
who by definition cannot be identified. Not the names of criminals and
fugitives, the people the existing system is designed to track. And only
a fool could believe that, with all the flack the FBI has gotten over its
pre-September 11 failures, field agents are slacking in their pursuit of
persons who have even the remotest reason for being on watch lists for
actual bombers, skyjackers and poisoners of water. That's not what the
computers in Washington crave.
The FBI is focused on "preventing attacks," says the NYT article. In the
bureau's lexicon, "preventative measures" is a euphemism for surveillance
of persons and infiltration of groups that have committed no crime for
which they can be arrested. There can be but one result that satisfies
headquarters' demand: more names and thicker dossiers. And there is only
one way for the agents in the field to produce these items in sufficient
quantity; the "anti-terror squads" must revert to their roles as Red
Squads, Black Militant Squads and Agitator Squads - under new
nomenclature, of course.
This should have been expected since the morning the Twin Towers fell, a
reflexive reaction by an agency molded from its beginnings as a political
police force. However, the sheer size of the net being cast - to include
blond, Catholic, Wisconsin schoolgirls attempting to board a flight to
Washington to lobby their congressman against the U.S. war in Columbia -
indicates that the "usual suspects," the historical targets of
repression, will have unaccustomed, white middle class company.
The Bush regime, it is becoming apparent, is as serious about smashing
domestic opposition to its agenda as it is about Saddam Hussein. As Bush
told Bob Woodward, "I will seize the opportunity to achieve big goals."
Islam is the FBI's open portal to the African American community at
large. The Nation of Islam has a long history of relationships with
Middle Eastern and Arab nations, and non-NOI African American Muslims
often worship with foreign co-religionists. FBI mumbo-jumbo can fill in
the rest of the justifications for the most intensive, general
surveillance of Black American Muslims and their associates. Since these
Muslims are indigenous, comprising probably 5 percent of African American
citizens, their relatives and "associates" include virtually the entire
Black population.
The chosen ones
Contragate criminal John Poindexter's Total Information Awareness
project, under construction in the bowels of the Pentagon with the
capability to keep track of an individual's every electronic move, is not
designed to screen the behavior of 285 million Americans. Too much data,
few practical uses. But tens or a few hundreds of thousands of
politically marked targets - that's a potentially doable mission. The
logic of world events and the zeal of the Bush men will create the
domestic emergency long before Poindexter's machine is ready but, by its
very existence, the project telegraphs the regime's intentions.
Here's how Poindexter's Information Awareness Office describes his
project:
The TIA program objective is to create a counter-terrorism information
system that: (1) increases information coverage by an order of magnitude,
and affords easy future scaling; (2) provides focused warnings within an
hour after a triggering event occurs or an evidence threshold is passed;
(3) can automatically queue analysts based on partial pattern matches and
has patterns that cover 90% of all previously known foreign terrorist
attacks; and, (4) supports collaboration, analytical reasoning and
information sharing so that analysts can hypothesize, test and propose
theories and mitigating strategies about possible futures, so
decision-makers can effectively evaluate the impact of current or future
policies and prospective courses of action.
Domestic translation: Round up the people in categories X and Y.
If it appears that we are painting a picture of inevitable, massive
detentions and restrictions of American citizens, it is because the daily
sweep of administration activity points in that direction. There will be
serious if not catastrophic terror attacks on U.S. soil - Bush's foreign
policy guarantees it. When the attacks come, the regime in Washington
will declare some kind of state of emergency; only the particulars are
unknown, probably to the Bush men, themselves. And they are not compiling
lists of public activists and left-leaners, in urgent and sloppy haste,
just for the fun of it.
Measures will be taken against the names on the lists of those designated
as domestic threats. An action plan will inexorably shape itself around
the database. That's how bureaucracies of repression work. Discreet
categories of threat require specific measures of response. It will take
a while for the various agencies to work out the details. There can be no
doubt, however, that the people closest to George Bush are impatient to
move the task along.
There is no precedent for the things in store in the days ahead: not
McCarthyism, not Cointelpro, not a combination of the two. Technology
plus the new, corporate-style methods of a ruthless, social
monopoly-minded, mass media manipulating, coldly corrupt and absolutely
cynical politic class has created and is feeding upon an environment of
permanent crisis. These men have plans to reorganize American society and
the world, they know they will be opposed by larger and deeper sectors of
the population over time, and they are preparing to act decisively
against the opposition. First, they take names.
Nothing but a mass movement, comprised of many "targets," can stop the
machine that is clanking rather noisily into place. However, the
machinery, itself, may become the engine of mass mobilization. The Bush
men, supremely arrogant and flush with power, are making a mistake in
advertising their intentions against the persons of white lawyers and
other left-liberals. Bush and Cheney forget the duality of American
society; some people can be abused with impunity; others, connected to
significant sectors of opinion and resources by profession, family wealth
and background and, most importantly, by race - cannot be so cavalierly
stripped of their citizenship rights.
The duality of American life and death
December 4 marks the 33rd anniversary of the assassination of Black
Panthers Fred Hampton and Mark Clark, set up for execution in Chicago by
an FBI contract agent. Hampton was barely 21 years old, a brilliant,
one-time pre-law student and Youth Leader of the West Suburban (Chicago)
branch of the NAACP, where he organized 500 members. Hampton then founded
the Chicago chapter of the Black Panther Party and rose swiftly to
national prominence. Police riddled Hampton's body with bullets while he
lay helpless, drugged by the FBI's employee.
The people who haul white lawyers and Catholic nuns off of airplanes will
kill a Black activist in his bed the very same night. This is what passes
for equivalence in a racist society.
White folks are being put on some serious lists. Under the perverse
duality of America, that means the canaries are already dying.

BBC: Israel accused over Gaza killings
A United Nations official says eight of the 10 Palestinians killed during an Israeli raid on a refugee camp in the Gaza Strip on Friday morning were unarmed civilians.
"Die UNO sagt von den 10 am Freitag getöteten Palästinesern seien 8 unbewaffnete Zivilisten gewesen. Israel hatte die Ermordung der Zivilisten einen Erfolg gennant. Mindestens 5 der 10 seien Hamas-Kämpfer gewesen. Es scheint als sei die Erschiessung von Zivilisten mittlerweile offizielle IDF-Taktik"

Commondreams: A New Age of Empire in the Middle East, Courtesy of the US and UK
British Member of Parliament George Galloway says that a plan for the division of the Middle East is circulating in the corridors of power on both sides of the Atlantic. In a recent interview, Galloway asserted that ministers and eminent figures in the British government are deliberating the partition of the Middle East, harking back to the colonial map-making in the first quarter of the 20th century that established the modern nation-states of the region. An Anglo-American war against Iraq, he tells me, could be the opening salvo in the break up of the region. Galloway, who met with Saddam Hussein in Baghdad this August, states that the war aims of the US and Britain go well beyond replacing the Iraqi leader. “They include a recasting of the entire Middle East, the better to ensure the hegemony of the big powers over the natural resources of the Middle East and the safety and security of the vanguard of imperialist interests in the area – the state of Israel. And part of that is actually redrawing boundaries.”

Washington Post: Antiwar Effort Gains Momentum
Growing Peace Movement's Ranks Include Some Unlikely Allies
After large rallies in Washington and San Francisco on
Oct. 26, the next big day to test the antiwar movement's might is Dec. 10,
International Human Rights Day. Hundreds of groups plan events, rallies and
civil disobedience to capture the nation's attention, including
demonstrations in Lafayette Park across from the White House and at a
military recruitment center in downtown Washington. Otherwise, antiwar
groups, which tend to rely on the Internet to receive and spread
information, operate largely without the attention of the media or Capitol
Hill. Yet many of those speaking out against an attack on Iraq represent
large numbers of Americans, including John J. Sweeney, president of the
AFL-CIO (with 13 million members); the National Council of Churches (which
represents 36 Protestant and Orthodox denominations, with 50 million
members); and the National Conference of Catholic Bishops (the leadership
arm of 65 million Roman Catholics)."

Pravda: US Warplanes in Missile Attack on Iraqi Oil Refinery
Residents in Basra, southern Iraq, claim that US warplanes launched two missiles at an oil refinery on Sunday, killing at least eight people and injuring “around 20”. The offices of the oil-for-food programme were destroyed.
Passers-by were showered with splinters of glass as US warplanes inexplicably launched two missiles at a civilian target in Basra, a state-owned oil refinery. The eye-witness reports have not been confirmed by the Pentagon, which denies any knowledge of the incident.
Being true, this attack is a monstrous act of piracy, a criminal and murderous intrusion into the internal affairs of a sovereign nation, a violation of international law and of the rights of Iraq as a State, a heinous provocation at a time when diplomacy is the order of the day in the rest of the international community.

Indymedia: Bush: Shoot Citizens, Ask Questions, Then Get A Lawyer (Maybe)
In what may be a landmark Supreme Court case to overturn the Miranda decision, the court is scheduled to hear arguments from Solicitor General Theodore Olsen on December 4, 2002.
Bush's political appointee intends to claim our government has the right to coerce information from a witness, as long as the evidence obtained isn't used at trial against the witness.
The landmark 1966 Miranda v. Arizona decision ruled that suspects could not be interrogated without first being advised of their rights to remain silent and to obtain an attorney. The wording of Miranda is familiar to all Americans who watch TV, and is assumed as a basic right. The Justice Department wants to change all that.
In other words, Olsen plans to argue the police can detain or arrest anyone for any reason and then beat you up or even shoot you to get information, even if there are no emergent circumstances.
In other countries, this is called torture. In our country, we have the 5th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution designed to prevent such horrendous abuses by the police.

For too long the world has ignored the relentless military oppression of the Palestinian people. Between the 29th of September 2000 and 14th May 2002, over 1,545* Palestinians have been killed and more than 19,206* injured by the Israeli army and settlers. The Government of Israel has intensified collective punishment on the Palestinian civilian population, laying siege to their land, preventing free movement and devastating the Palestinian economy. "Normal" life is impossible as people are unable to work, move around freely, attend school, get to hospitals, or to obtain water.
We call for mass consumer action, along the lines of the boycott of South African produce during the anti-apartheid campaign. By joining this boycott individuals and organisations can take concrete steps to stand up against the gross human rights violations by the Israeli State.
We, the undersigned, call for an immediate, unconditional lifting of the siege of the occupied territories, an end to the occupation, and the implementation of UN resolutions and international humanitarian law in relation to the Palestinian people.
We therefore support:
A boycott of Israeli products
A boycott of Israeli leisure tourism

The petition comes less than two weeks after Iain Hook, a British UN worker, was shot dead by an Israeli soldier inside a UN compound as he tried to evacuate his staff.
"For two years, United Nations staff have been subject to escalating harassment and violence by Israel's military, so that the protection supposed to be afforded by the blue letters of the UN is being steadily eroded," said the petition, which was signed by 64 UN staff working in Israel and the occupied territories."

"For two years, United Nations staff have been subject to escalating harassment and violence by Israel's military, so that the protection supposed to be afforded by the blue letters of the UN is being steadily eroded," said the petition, which was signed by 64 UN staff working in Israel and the occupied territories."

They Spy: How Law Enforcement Is Keeping Tabs on The New Peace Movement
A.C. Thompson (Voices For Change)
21 Nov 02
Perhaps the story of Malaysia Airlines Flight 91 is a harbinger of things
to come for the nascent peace movement.
The Sept. 8 flight was poised to take off from Newark, N.J., for Dubai,
United Arab Emirates, and a final destination of Kabul, Afghanistan, when
agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation strode aboard. The G-men
escorted seven passengers off the plane and into a room where they were
interrogated for six hours. Flight 91 took off without the group.
Their offense? Signing up for a two-week "Reality Tour" of bomb-pocked
Afghanistan, a junket organized by San Francisco-based human rights group
Global Exchange.
"They wanted to know about Global Exchange," says one of the detainees,
Glenda Marsh, a Sacramento peace activist and state-employed biologist.
"They asked me if I'd heard the people I was traveling with make anti-
American statements."
Now Marsh is preparing to file a Freedom of Information Act request to see
if the FBI is compiling a dossier on her.
Hints of a new wave of COINTELPRO-style government surveillance first
surfaced in fall 1999 as protesters gearing up for the World Trade
Organization's meeting in Seattle complained about infiltration by
undercover cops and federal agents. After Sept. 11, 2001, the feds embarked
on an unprecedented and brazen campaign of domestic spying. Leading the
charge, Attorney General John Ashcroft signaled his intent to spy on law-
abiding religious congregations and political groups and pushed through the
USA PATRIOT Act, which vastly expanded the government's phone-tapping and
e-mail-monitoring powers and broke down barriers between the Central
Intelligence Agency and the FBI. Now there's mounting evidence that
government agents - returning to the ways of J. Edgar Hoover - are
monitoring political dissidents.
According to Steve Filandrinos, the Global Exchange staffer who organized
the tour, the FBI agents wanted to know why the group, which included five
Afghan Americans, was headed overseas and who was sending them there. The
tours, Filandrinos explains, "are a way to give Americans a chance to
connect with Afghans involved in the reconstruction process, to make sure
Americans know what's going on there, and to bear witness to the [U.S.-led]
bombing."
While the waylaid tourists eventually made it to Kabul, their fun with the
federal government wasn't over. Flying into Los Angeles International
Airport Sept. 20, one member of the group was grabbed by U.S. Customs
Service agents outside the airport, and another was called at home by the
FBI for more questioning eight days later.
The Global Exchange incident echoes the widely reported hassles of Jan
Adams and Rebecca Gordon, founders of War Times, a San Francisco
publication critical of President George W. Bush's passion for dropping
ordnance on foreign countries. On Aug. 7, Adams and Gordon were attempting
to fly from San Francisco to Boston when they were detained by police and
informed that their names were on a list of people under scrutiny by the
FBI. "We can only assume that the government is laboring under the
misapprehension that we're terrorists," Adams says.
Neither woman has ever been charged with any serious crime, though both
have been arrested for civil disobedience.
After calls to police headquarters and two searches by airport security,
Adams and Gordon were escorted onto the plane.
There are several ways all of this government scrutiny could play out. If
the new peace movement develops the muscle to paralyze major cities - à
la
antiglobalizers - it may find the feds doing more than discreetly keeping
tabs and occasionally pulling suspected troublemakers off airplanes.
There's the real possibility that FBI agents will covertly slip into the
movement with the aim of crippling it from within (a favored tactic in the
1960s against the Black Panthers and the New Left) or enticing more-
militant activists to participate in felonious behavior (as the bureau did
more recently with Earth First! and the militia and white separatist
movements).
"Surveillance and intelligence gathering are back," asserts Dennis
Cunningham, an attorney who has sued the FBI repeatedly, most recently on
behalf of Earth First!ers Judi Bari and Darryl Cherney. "What's to stop
them from engaging in disruptive activity designed to neutralize a
movement?"
Another possibility is that prosecutors could start collecting information
on movement leaders with an eye toward using the federal Racketeer
Influenced and Corrupt Organizations statute. Designed to take down mafiosi
and loaded with stiff penalties, RICO targets key members of groups that
engage in a pattern of criminal activity, and the case could be made that
protesters who repeatedly disrupt business as usual fit that bill. In fact,
that case has already been made: the RICO statute was employed by the
National Organization for Women in a 1998 civil suit against abortion
clinic blockaders in Chicago. The save-the-fetuses side lost and was
ordered to pay $255,000 in damages.
Ashcroft's baby, the PATRIOT Act, includes some language similar to that of
RICO, and could be put to use as well.
Cunningham speculates that "we'll see them use the PATRIOT Act first. They
want to put it to the test, see what they can do with it."

But Bali was just the story of the month. And soon, perhaps, the Karachi bombings and the Bali bombings and the Mombasa bombings will be just stories of the week. See how easily we have acclimatised to death on a vast scale? What is to be this week's nightmare? How many innocents will be killed by the time you open next week's Independent on Sunday?
But last week's killings in Kenya and the attempt to bring down an Israeli airliner were far more important than most people realise. For by bringing Israel into the loop – by allowing Israel to become a partner in President Bush's asinine "war on terror" – al-Qa'ida has ensured that the Arab Muslim world will henceforth give its real if quiescent sympathy to Osama bin Laden. Outraged as many Arabs were at the international crimes against humanity of 11 September 2001, few will object to an attack against Israelis, however cruel, while Israel's suppression of the Palestinians continues. If al-Qa'ida is now against Israel, Arabs will give their support"

Propagandacritic.com: How Newt Gingrich used these techniques
TALK LIKE NEWT
This example occurred more than ten years ago, but it is one of the most striking applications of propaganda techniques in recent memory. A popular Republican politician on his way to the top, Newt Gingrich clearly understood the power of propaganda. His political action committee (GOPAC) mailed a pamphlet entitled Language, A Key Mechanism of Control to Republicans across the country. The booklet offered rhetorical advice to Republican candidates who wanted to "speak like Newt." It was subsequently awarded a Doublespeak Award by the National Conference of Teachers of English in 1990.
The booklet contained two lists of words. GOP candidates were instructed to use one set of "positive, governing words," (glittering generalities) when speaking about themselves. A second set of negative words (name-calling words) were to be used against their opponents.
View the glittering generalities.
View the name-calling words.
A brief glance at the words on Gingrich's lists suggests that they continue to be powerful tools in American political discourse. Words such as "vision, courage, lead, learn, commitment, empower, and freedom" are common to politicians on all sides of the political spectrum. Call-in radio hosts regularly use words like "ideological, liberal, bureaucracy, crisis, endanger, and lie" to discredit certain ideas.

The Republican:
Bush Government "Out of Control"
By Chuck Baldwin
Disrtbuted by The Republican
November 22, 2002
Back in August, columnist Paul Craig Roberts asked the question, "Is a vote for Republicans a vote for a police state?" The answer seems to be a resounding yes! The Bush administration seems determined to turn our country into the most elaborate and sophisticated police state ever devised.
Things are so bad that outgoing house majority leader Dick Armey said that under Bush the federal government is "out of control." In fact, the conservative congressman is reported to be seriously considering taking a position with the ACLU in order to help fight the federal government's usurpation of constitutionally protected liberties. Does that mean one must leave the Republican Party in order to fight for liberty? Maybe so.
According to News Max, "Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-CO) is being targeted for defeat - not by the Democrats, but by the GOP establishment." Why? Tancredo is the country's most outspoken critic of Bush's accommodations of illegal aliens. In other words, it's not enough to be a conservative Republican; one must be absolutely loyal to the fuehrer, George Bush, and to his brand of big government Republicanism. Tancredo's not, so he's on his way out.
Furthermore, columnist William Safire recently warned against Bush's Homeland Security Act. In a column written for the New York Times Safire said, "Every purchase you make with a credit card, every magazine subscription you buy and medical prescription you fill, every Web site you visit and e-mail you send or receive, every academic grade you receive, every bank deposit you make, every trip you book and every event you attend - all these transactions and communications will go into what the Defense Department describes as 'a virtual, centralized grand database.'"
Safire continued, "To this computerized dossier on your private life from commercial sources, add every piece of information that government has about you - passports, driver's license and bridge toll records, judicial and divorce records, complaints from nosy neighbors to the FBI, your lifetime paper trail plus the latest hidden camera surveillance - and you have the supersnoop's dream: a 'Total Information Awareness' about every U.S. citizen."
In another account, The Seattle Times recently reported, "The USA Patriot Act remains shrouded in complexity and secrecy. Bush administration officials won't say how it has been used."
The Times continued by saying, "The CIA and FBI for the first time ever are allowed to mix foreign intelligence with law enforcement on U.S. soil. Citing the act, Attorney General John Ashcroft also authorized FBI agents to spy on domestic groups without having to show evidence of a crime."
The tyrannical tendencies of old King George III of England cannot hold a candle to the Machiavellian machinations of King George XLIII of the United States. Unfortunately, there are few Paul Reveres around to sound an alarm. Unless contemporary patriots act quickly, Republicans, not Democrats, will be the ones that ultimately dismantle our constitution and trample our liberties.

IQUITOS, PERÚ—Two battalions of US Marine Jungle Expeditionary Forces have recently received deployment orders for insertion into Colombia this coming February, 2003.
"According to reliable sources, the battalions, which with support will total roughly 1,100 men, will rotate in and out of southern Colombia, with orders to eliminate all high officers of the FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia), scattering those who escape to the remote corners of the Amazon. The FARC hierarchy has been the subject of intensive US intelligence scrutiny for several years. The offensive will mean that the US is fighting wars on three fronts simultaneously: Afghanistan, Iraq and Colombia."

THE ROVING EYE
Apocalypse Now, or Alottanukes Soon
By Pepe Escobar
http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Front_Page/DK15Aa01.html#
At a time when a tape handed over to the Qatar-based Al-Jazeera television station has received widespread expose for its purported comments by Osama bin Laden in praise of recent terror events around the world, another al-Qaeda message released to the same station has received little coverage.
Al-Jazeera was granted an interview with one Mohammed al-Usuquf, allegedly al-Qaeda's number three. Al-Usuquf is said to be a doctor in physics and to hold a masters degree in international economics. A copy of the interview was sent to the prestigious Arab-language daily Al Quds Al Arabi, edited in London, but it was not printed.
Asia Times Online has obtained a copy of the interview, and reproduces excerpts here, with the caveat that the identity of the man has not yet been confirmed, nor has his membership within al-Qaeda.
Al-Usuquf says that al-Qaeda's Kuwaiti spokesman, Sulaiman Abu Ghaith, and bin Laden himself, suggested that he grant the interview. Bin Laden, he says, is "alive and healthy, along with his commanders Mohammed Atef, Khalid Shaik Mohammed and Mullah Omar".
Al-Usuquf starts by criticizing Washington's disrespect of the Kyoto Protocol on climatic change, the International Criminal Court and the Palestinian cause, as well as the "financial greed" engendering speculative gains over Third World countries. He also criticizes the manner in which America wastes wealth, like US$80 billion a year on gambling. "They [have] lost the notion of spirituality and only live in sin."
For this reason, America must be destroyed, and al-Usuquf insists that "aircraft carriers, nuclear submarines and spy satellites will be worthless in the next war".
Al-Qaeda, according to him, has 5,000 first rank operatives and around 20,000 all over the world. Of all the prisoners in the US, only "20 or 30" are al-Qaeda, and all of them "second-rank". Confirming Asia Times Online information, he swears that there are no first-rank prisoners in Guantanamo in Cuba. Al-Usuquf says, "We have more than 500 first-rank and 800 second-rank [operatives] inside the US." "First rank" are considered ones that have lived in the US for more than 10 years, most of them married with children. "They have an idea about the plans, and they are just waiting for a call." "Second-rank" operatives arrived in the past five years and "have no idea about the plans". They are all willing to die.
Al-Usuquf insists that September 11 "was just the beginning. It was a way to call the world's attention to what's going to happen." He then details a plan to destroy the US by "attacking the heart of what they consider the most important thing in the world: money".
"The American economy is an economy of false appearances," says al-Usuquf. "There's no real economic weight. American GNP is something around $10 trillion, but only 1 percent comes from agriculture, and only 24 percent from industry. So 75 percent of its GNP comes from services, and most of it is financial speculation. For someone who understands economics, and apparently America's Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill does not, or cannot, the US as a whole behaves like an immense dot.com, and dollars are its stocks. The value of stocks from a given company is directly proportional to its profitability. When a company only provides services, but does not produce goods, the value of its stocks depends on its credibility. What I'm saying is if US credibility is affected, its stocks - the US dollar - will fall at tremendous speed, and the whole American economy will collapse."
Al-Usuquf is absolutely positive, "because, in a smaller scale, this is exactly what big financial conglomerates do with Third World countries to collect profits in one month that no Swiss bank would guarantee in four to five years". Al-Usuquf says that al-Qaeda could do the same by "provoking a deficit of $50 to 70 trillion, the equivalent to five to seven years of the GNP of the US". How? By "destroying America's seven largest cities and some other measures". The means? "Atomic bombs."
Al-Usuquf's most startling revelation is that the bombs "won't be launched, they are already there". "Seven nuclear heads have already been positioned on American soil, before September 11, and they are ready to be detonated. Before September 11, American security was a fiasco, and even later, if we needed, we could position the bombs there. They arrived through seaports, as normal cargo. A nuclear head is not bigger than a fridge, so it can easily be camouflaged as one. Thousands of containers arrive at a seaport every day, and even with very efficient security, it's impossible to check and examine each one of them."
Al-Usuquf says that the bombs were bought on the black market: five from the former USSR and two from Pakistan. The five Russian heads "are from T-3 missiles, also known as RD-107, and their power is around 100 kilotons each, that is five times the Hiroshima bomb. The Pakistani ones are less powerful, something around 10 kilotons each."
Each of the Russian bombs would have cost around $200 million. Al-Qaeda was able to raise the money "because we have many sponsors. Many countries sponsor us, and also some very rich people." And not all of these are Arab countries. "Some European countries as well are also interested in the fall of the US." As to the "rich people", they are "people who are also tired of seeing the US bleeding the rest of the world."
And Iraq's Saddam Hussein, says Al-Usuquf, is not one of these people, "but just a collaborator, represented by Abdul Tawab Hawaish, his vice prime minister and responsible for Iraq's arms program".
Al-Usuquf says that the bombs cannot be detected by US authorities. "Even if they are old, they were modernized and are very well hidden. Even if they were located, they have autodetonation mechanisms in case something or someone gets close. Even an electromagnetic pulse is not capable of deactivating them." The bombs allegedly cannot be detected because "they are enveloped in thick layers of lead". They could be detonated "by various methods - cellphone call, radio frequency, seismic shock or by their regressive clock".
Al-Usuquf details the whole plan. "First, one head would be detonated, which would cause the deaths of 800,000 to 1 million people and a chaos never seen before. During this chaos, two or three planes, which are now disassembled inside barns near empty roads in the US countryside, would take off in suicide missions to pulverize another two or three big American cities with chemicals. Once the disease was identified, all seaports and airports would be quarantined. Land borders would also be closed. No plane, boat or car would enter or leave the US. This would be total chaos." The first target would be the city "that would offer the best conditions, for example bright sky and winds of eight or more miles an hour blowing towards the center of the country, so radioactive dust can contaminate the largest possible area".
This attack would not knock out the US, recognizes al-Usuquf, "But the process would be initiated. As with the World Trade Center, it would be just a question of time for the whole economic structure to be turned to dust. If the objectives are reached with one bomb and diseases, probably we will save the lives of other people, but it's risky, and probably six more bombs will be detonated, one a week, and more attacks with chemical weapons will be launched."
According to estimates made by al-Usuquf "and Ayman al-Zawahiri", al-Qaeda's number 2, about 15 million people would die, victims of the bombs and the radiation. Among those contaminated by diseases, "25 percent will die, a figure around more than 5 million, plus many others due to the chaos and disorder".
Al-Usuquf does not fear an American military response. "Even if five or 10 cities are chosen at random to be destroyed, it will still be a small price to pay. The problem is that the economic despair will be so great that even if it saves [money] by not using weapons, American liquidity will be near zero, and the US will make more money selling a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier to Turkey or Italy for $5 billion, because they will urgently need to recapitalize. But it will be too late. Moreover, what will remain of an American soldier's morale to fight knowing that his whole family died and his country ceased to exist? To fight for what?"
The world economy would not collapse, says al-Usuquf, although "in the beginning, it will be very difficult. But without the US the world will soon rise in a more just and fraternal manner. Nothing can stop the plan."
And whatever America does, "it's too late". When will the attack begin? "I can't tell."

Ny Times: Why Putin Boils Over: Chechnya Is His Personal War
"If you are a Christian, you are in danger," Mr. Putin said. "If you decide to become a Muslim, this won't save you either, because they think that traditional Islam is also hostile to their goals."
"If you are determined to become a complete Islamic radical and are ready to undergo circumcision, then I invite you to Moscow. We are multi-confessional. We have experts in this sphere as well.
