Here are estimates so far of the number of people participating in today's demonstrations against the war in Iraq. The biggest events have been in Rome ( 2,500,000 ), London ( 1,500,000 ), and Berlin ( 500,000 ). The world-wide total is now approaching 7 million (with the Americas yet to come)!
Here are estimates so far of the number of people participating in today's demonstrations against the war in Iraq. I used the higher figures given by organizers, as opposed to the lower police estimates. Most are from mainstream media sources, although I did check several IndyMedia newswires for figures as well.
For the biggest demonstration, in Rome, I split the difference between the 2,000,000 figure which has been widely reported, and the 3,000,000 figure that I found on the Italian IndyMedia site: http://italy.indymedia.org/news/2003/02/177868.php

CNN: Inspectors report to divided council
Chief U.N. weapons inspector Hans Blix told the United Nations Security Council Friday that inspectors had not found any weapons of mass destruction during their search in Iraq, but he did not rule out the possibility that they may exist.
Blix said that the chief problem for U.N. weapons inspectors lies in locating such chemical weapons as the deadly VX nerve agent Iraq was known to have in 1998 but are not on the Iraqi declaration.
Blix told the council that Iraq should either present any weapons of mass destruction to inspectors for destruction or show evidence that they have been destroyed.
Blix, executive chairman of the U.N. Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission and Mohamed ElBaradei, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, are delivering key reports Friday to the council, which is sharply divided over the best course to take to get Iraq to conform with international demands to disarm.

Während in Berlin Bundeskanzler Schröder noch einmal nachhaltig den Versuch einer friedlichen Lösung verteidigte, die auf Entwaffnung durch verstärkte Inspektionen setzt, hat Präsident Bush den bellizistischen Ton vor den blau gekleideten Matrosen der Mayport Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, Florida, noch einmal gesteigert, aber auch klar gemacht, worum es ihm geht: um den Eingang in die Weltgeschichte und die Erfüllung des geschichtlichen Auftrags an seine Generation und an seine Nation. Besonders Deutsche werden bei solchen "leadership"-Allüren hellhörig. Und Bush hat es zwar geschafft, viele Regierungen mit Druck, Versprechungen und dem Anbieten von Vorteilen auf seine Seite zu bringen, was aber die Mehrzahl der Menschen im alten und neuen Europa anbetrifft, so ist mit der Ablehnung der Bush-Politik möglicherweise der Grund für eine neue Einheit gelegt worden

SOMEONE IN the Justice Department clearly wants to preserve our most cherished civil liberties.
Last week, that individual leaked a bill secretly drafted by Attorney General John Ashcroft's staff to the Center for Public Integrity. "The Domestic Security Enhancement Act of 2003," is a chilling sequel to the USA Patriot Act, passed shortly after Sept.11, 2001. It's already been dubbed "Patriot Act II."
The draft legislation would reduce judicial oversight of surveillance, authorize secret arrests, create new death penalties and allow the government to revoke the citizenship of any American who is a member of -- or gives material support to -- a group designated as a "terrorist organization" by Ashcroft.
Congress, moreover, was not consulted. Ashcroft's office only sent copies to House Speaker Dennis Hastert and Vice President Dick Cheney on Jan. 10, 2003.

It raises questions about how we balance liberty and security - the rights of individuals versus the rule of law.

We won't have to worry about that slippery eel Osama anymore.
According to Jane Wardell of the Associated Press, an Islamic news agency in London has released yet another Osama tape (no doubt there will soon be an Osama's greatest hits tape released).
On this latest tape bin Laden supposedly tells us he will die as a martyr "in the eagle's belly," which I guess means he will die here, in the US. In Washington, so-called "counterterrorism officials" (read: CIA guys who know about this kind of stuff because they invented a lot of it) are supposedly reviewing the tape.
Now, since Osama is a CIA asset, this latest tape can only mean one of two things:
1: Osama is about to be retired, which is to say there will be no more tapes, no more Osama sightings (these are a lot like Elvis sightings), and a lot less talk about him in the corporate media.
Actually, Bush stopped talking about Osama a long time ago. He'd rather talk about Saddam. If polls mean anything (even though it's difficult to tell the rigged polls from the real polls), a lot of Americans think Saddam and Osama are the same person, plus (thanks to Colin's UN presentation) more and more of us think we should go it alone and bomb the bejesus out of Iraq -- you know just in case they have WMD, even though trained guys with specialized equipment can't find any. Better to be safe than sorry, right?
2: There's just too many Osamas.
Osama, Osama, who's the real Osama? There's the CIA Osama, and then there's the Osama who delivers coded messages to his forces of darkness. Is the latest Osama tape real, or fake? Since Osama is a mythical figure these days, it's way too easy for people to invoke him for any number of reasons. It really is a problem, especially for Bush. He never mentions Osama these days, so it's time for Osama to exit stage right.

In Washington, so-called "counterterrorism officials" (read: CIA guys who know about this kind of stuff because they invented a lot of it) are supposedly reviewing the tape.
Now, since Osama is a CIA asset, this latest tape can only mean one of two things:
1: Osama is about to be retired, which is to say there will be no more tapes, no more Osama sightings (these are a lot like Elvis sightings), and a lot less talk about him in the corporate media.
Actually, Bush stopped talking about Osama a long time ago. He'd rather talk about Saddam. If polls mean anything (even though it's difficult to tell the rigged polls from the real polls), a lot of Americans think Saddam and Osama are the same person, plus (thanks to Colin's UN presentation) more and more of us think we should go it alone and bomb the bejesus out of Iraq -- you know just in case they have WMD, even though trained guys with specialized equipment can't find any. Better to be safe than sorry, right?
2: There's just too many Osamas.
Osama, Osama, who's the real Osama? There's the CIA Osama, and then there's the Osama who delivers coded messages to his forces of darkness. Is the latest Osama tape real, or fake? Since Osama is a mythical figure these days, it's way too easy for people to invoke him for any number of reasons. It really is a problem, especially for Bush. He never mentions Osama these days, so it's time for Osama to exit stage right.

The US knew about the latest Osama bin Laden tape five days before it was broadcast by the Qatar-based TV station al-Jazeera, according to a US intelligence source. The Qatari government had been provided with a copy of the tape by the channel's management and passed it on to Washington, the source told the Guardian yesterday.
Although al-Jazeera is owned by the government of Qatar, the station insists that it is editorially independent.
But according to the US source, al-Jazeera's management has to clear broadcasts of such controversial material with the authorities.
"They have to cooperate with the Qatari government. They have to give them a copy of tapes like that before they broadcast it, and we have good relations with the Qataris," said the intelligence source.
News of the tape reached Washington by last Thursday. It is unclear whether the US influenced the timing of the broadcast and, if not, why it was delayed until Tuesday.

If you want to know why people don't trust what the United States says about Iraq, get a load of what Secretary of State Colin Powell said this morning.
On Oct. 7, 2001, Arab TV superstation Al Jazeera aired a video in which Osama Bin Laden suggested that he was fighting for Iraq and Palestine. "One million Iraqi children have thus far died in Iraq although they did not do anything wrong," Bin Laden protested. "Israeli tanks and tracked vehicles also enter to wreak havoc in Palestine … and we hear no voices raised.".....
...That was then; this is now. Tuesday morning, Powell testified before the Senate Budget Committee. He warned that Al Jazeera would soon air a new Bin Laden statement in which "once again he speaks to the people of Iraq and talks about their struggle and how he is in partnership with Iraq. This nexus between terrorists and states that are developing weapons of mass destruction can no longer be looked away from and ignored."...
...The punch line? Bin Laden was talking about hypocrisy.

The team was welcomed into the homes of more than 100 Iraqi families where they found the overwhelming message to be one of fear and the thought of being killed. Many live in a news void, with little information concerning the heightened threat of war.

Sources, foreign intelligence sources, "our sources," defectors, sources, sources, sources. Colin Powell's terror talk to the United Nations Security Council yesterday sounded like one of those government-inspired reports on the front page of The New York Times – where it will most certainly be treated with due reverence in this morning's edition. It was a bit like heating up old soup. Haven't we heard most of this stuff before? Should one trust the man? General Powell, I mean, not Saddam.
Certainly we don't trust Saddam but Secretary of State Powell's presentation was a mixture of awesomely funny recordings of Iraqi Republican Guard telephone intercepts à la Samuel Beckett that just might have been some terrifying little proof that Saddam really is conning the UN inspectors again, and some ancient material on the Monster of Baghdad's all too well known record of beastliness. I am still waiting to hear the Arabic for the State Department's translation of "Okay Buddy" – "Consider it done, Sir" – this from the Republican Guard's "Captain Ibrahim", for heaven's sake – and some dinky illustrations of mobile bio-labs whose lorries and railway trucks were in such perfect condition that they suggested the Pentagon didn't have much idea of the dilapidated state of Saddam's army.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Secretary of State Colin Powell told a Senate panel Tuesday that what appears to be a new statement from Osama bin Laden shows why the world needs to be concerned about Iraqi ties to terrorism.
Powell said he read a transcript of ``what bin Laden -- or who we believe to be bin Laden'' will be saying on the Al-Jazeera Arab satellite station later Tuesday, ``where once again he speaks to the people of Iraq and talks about their struggle and how he is in partnership with Iraq.''
Al-Jazeera chief editor Ibrahim Hilal told The Associated Press late Tuesday that his office had just received an audio tape with bin Laden's voice. He said he and and the station's board were listening to the tape and would make a decision on when to air it.

London - Es sei möglich, dass die al-Qaida das Ende des islamischen Opferfestes Eid al Adha zum Anlass nehme, Anschläge auf den größten europäischen Flughafen zu verüben, hieß es in einer Mitteilung der Londoner Polizei. "Von Zeit zu Zeit ist es notwendig, die Stufe der Sicherheitsaktivität zu erhöhen. Unserer Meinung nach ist es klug, dies jetzt zu tun", teilte Scotland Yard weiter mit.
Auch an anderen Orten der britischen Hauptstadt wurde die Bewachung verstärkt. Ein BBC-Korrespondent nannte die Entsendung von 450 Soldaten mit Panzern und anderen Militärfahrzeugen nach Heathrow "absolut beispiellos". Es müsse sich um eine recht "spezifische Bedrohung" handeln, sonst hätte sich Scotland Yard nicht zu einem solchen Schritt entschlossen. Ein Sprecher des Verteidigungsministeriums kündigte an, die Soldaten würden solange auf dem Flughafengelände bleiben, wie sie gebraucht würden.

We are meeting at a moment of world history that is in many ways unique – a moment that is ominous, but also full of hope.
The most powerful state in history has proclaimed, loud and clear, that it intends to rule the world by force, the dimension in which it reigns supreme. Apart from the conventional bow to noble intentions that is the standard (hence meaningless) accompaniment of coercion, its leaders are committed to pursuit of their “imperial ambition,” as it is frankly described in the leading journal of the foreign policy establishment – critically, an important matter. They have also declared that they will tolerate no competitors, now or in the future. They evidently believe that the means of violence in their hands are so extraordinary that they can dismiss with contempt anyone who stands in their way. There is good reason to believe that the war with Iraq is intended, in part, to teach the world some lessons about what lies ahead when the empire decides to strike a blow -- though “war” is hardly the proper term, given the array of forces.
The doctrine is not entirely new, nor unique to the US, but it has never before been proclaimed with such brazen arrogance – at least not by anyone we would care to remember.

Weiter wird empfohlen, ein Arsenal von Taschenlampen, Scheren, Radios, Büchsenöffnern, Decken und Batterien anzulegen. Die Lebensmittelvorräte sollten für drei Tage reichen.
Trotz der beunruhigenden Empfehlungen warnte das Ministerium vor einer Überreaktion und riet den Bürgern, ihren normalen Alltagsgeschäften nachzugehen.

Noch nie gab es derart massive Proteste gegen einen Feldzug, der noch überhaupt nicht begonnen hat. Millionen von Kriegsgegnern werden am Wochenende in allen fünf Kontinenten gegen den drohenden anglo-amerikanischen Angriff auf den Irak demonstrieren - allerdings versuchen staatliche Stellen in London, New York und Budapest die Protestzüge zu behindern.
"Schutzherrschaft erspart Probleme, wie sie etwa die New Yorker Organisatoren haben. Dort wird derzeit noch vor Gericht darüber gestritten, ob die Demo, zu der Musiker wie Pete Seeger, Harry Belafonte und Patti Smith aufgerufen haben, überhaupt stattfinden darf. Die Polizei will nur eine Kundgebung in der Nähe des Uno-Hauptquartiers genehmigen, eine Demonstration sei "aus Gründen der Sicherheit" nicht möglich. "
Auch Noam Chomsky, der US-Chefkritiker der Bush-Administration, glaubt zwar nicht unbedingt, dass sich die Kriegsplaner noch von ihrem Feldzug gegen den Irak abringen lassen, doch für ihn ist der globale Massenprotest bereits ein ermutigendes Novum: "In der ganzen Welt und in den USA", so Chomsky, "haben wir ein Ausmaß an Opposition gegen den kommenden Krieg, das in der amerikanischen und europäischen Geschichte einmalig ist." Und dabei habe "der Krieg noch nicht einmal angefangen".

Auch Noam Chomsky, der US-Chefkritiker der Bush-Administration, glaubt zwar nicht unbedingt, dass sich die Kriegsplaner noch von ihrem Feldzug gegen den Irak abringen lassen, doch für ihn ist der globale Massenprotest bereits ein ermutigendes Novum: "In der ganzen Welt und in den USA", so Chomsky, "haben wir ein Ausmaß an Opposition gegen den kommenden Krieg, das in der amerikanischen und europäischen Geschichte einmalig ist." Considering the thoroughness with which the bulldozers worked early last Thursday morning, one might have thought the soldiers received a clear order from their commanders and knew exactly what they were doing: demolishing the foundations of the pumping station for two water wells that provide nearly 50 percent of drinking and household water to Rafah in the Gaza Strip.
Raids on the houses of Rafah, particularly in its refugee camps, and the wounding of residents from IDF fire, has become so routine, so un-newsworthy, that it usually does not get reported in the Israeli media, which does, however, generally report on the number of Palestinians killed in those operations.
Now the 130,000 residents of Rafah are on strict water rationing, with water flowing into the neighborhoods only a few hours, and only every few days. People spend precious hours filling up jerricans straight from the working wells, or from agricultural wells with water unfit for human consumption. The rationing will continue until the money is found to get new pumping equipment and install it.

The prisoners were taken in Afghanistan, were transported to Guantanamo base, dressed in orange shell-suits and held in conditions of high security under suspicion, but not charges, of belonging either to Al-Qaeda or to the Taliban regime. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and Gen. Richard Myers, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, revealed the plans in February 5th testimony before the US House Armed Services Committee. This is the first official US acknowledgement that it may use (bio)chemical weapons in its crusade to rid other countries of such weapons. The Sunshine Project and other nonprofits have warned since late 2001 that the "War on Terrorism" may result in the United States using prohibited biological and chemical armaments, thereby violating the same treaties it purports to defend. The US announcement creates grave concerns for the future of arms control agreements, particularly the Chemical Weapons Convention.
Rumsfeld stated that plans are being made for multiple applications, including use of gas or aerosols on unarmed Iraqi civilians, in caves, and on prisoners. Rumsfeld reiterated the confusing, typical US official language about so-called "non-lethal" biochemical weapons. Rumsfeld described applications of a "riot agent" that clearly imply the complete incapacitation of victims, combatant and non-combatant, in armed conflict - a definition and usages that are at odds with the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC). Rumsfeld acknowledged US ratification of the CWC but expressed "regret" about its restrictions, stating that the US has "tangled ourselves up so badly" on policy for use of incapacitating biochemical weapons. Am Tag der internationalen Mobilisierung gegen den Krieg, am 15. Februar wird in Baghdad eine Demonstration stattfinden. Sie geschieht vor dem Haupgebäude der UNO, um zu forden, dass der Sicherheitsrat die UNO-Charta respektiert und die UNO-Inspektoren nicht den Willen der USA zum Krieg in die Hände spielen. Bilder der Demonstration werden über Satellit ausgestrahlt und können in der ganzen Welt empfangen werden. Die Demonstration wird von der italienischen Organisation “Eine Brücke für...” organisiert, sowie von der usamerikanischen Organisation “Voices in the Wilderness”. An der Demonstration werden internationale Freiwilligengruppen aus Bagdad teilnehmen und eine italienische Delegation, zusammengestellt von “Un Ponte per...”.

Endlich wissen wir, wie Geheimdienstarbeit in den postmodernen Zeiten nach dem Kalten Krieg vonstatten geht. Die Regierung gibt ein Dossier in Auftrag, das bestimmte Belege enthalten soll, um ihre Politik - in diesem Fall einen Krieg gegen den Irak - zu rechtfertigen. Und bald haben die fleißigen Geheimdienstagenten oder auch andere Regierungsangehörige vor ihren Computern zeit-, kräfte- und ressourcensparend mit Cut and Paste aus dem Internet das entsprechende Dokument zusammengezimmert.
Letzte Woche wurde der Bericht Iraq - its infrastructure of concealment, deception and intimidation von Blair veröffentlicht. Seine Inhalte beziehe er, so heißt es, aus zahlreichen Quellen, darunter auch Geheimdienstinformationen. Genannt wurden diese, wie sich dies für ein solches Dokument gehört, nicht. Die Informanten und Quellen, das haben wir erst anlässlich der multimedialen Präsentation von Beweisen durch Außenminister Powell erfahren, würden dadurch gefährdet werden.
Ob nun Ibrahim al-Marashi, ein Student des Monterey Institute of International Studies, auch gefährdet ist, darf man bezweifeln. Gefragt wurde er, wie er sagte, von den britischen Internet-Maulwürfen nicht, die sich reichlich seines Artikels Iraq's Security and Intelligence Network: A Guide and Analysis, der im letzten September in Middle East Review of International Affairs online veröffentlicht wurde. Zum Vorbild wird die britische Regierung dadurch nebenbei auch nicht, was die Bekämpfung von Cyberkriminalität angeht, wenn sie so mit dem Copyright umgeht. Weil es so schnell und einfach geht, wurden auch Tippfehler übernommen und nicht korrigiert. Man hat also ein gutes Vertrauen in die Internet-Publikationen. Ausgeschlachtet wurden zudem noch zwei Artikel aus Jane's Intelligence Review.
